the Kazell family

Dan + Katy first visited Kauai during their honeymoon in 2013. They came to poipu for some sun + surf, and serendipitously ended up on kiahuna beach. after exploring the rest of the island, they fell in love and returned several times over the years with family, friends, and eventually with their two daughters, sloane and shae.

They created the little rainbow kauai to be their home away from home, and a place they could share with their family + guests. they chose POIPU and kiahuna plantation specifically for the ideal location, and lovingly designed, remodeled, refurnished + decorated the condo to be a fresh + welcoming space.

Most days you can find them at their local denver neighborhood coffee shop, spending time with their two pups, or exploring the colorado mountains…but probably wishing they were on a beach in kauai.

the story behind the little rainbow

After having challenges starting a family, both Sloane + Shae are “rainbow babies,” meaning they came after a loss. after their 2nd miscarriage in between the girls, katy was diagnosed with choriocarcinoma, a rare pregnancy-related cancer, and spent the summer of 2019 going through chemo treatments. while in the thick of infusions and non-stop doctor appointments, she and dan planned a trip to kauai at the end of that year to be something to look forward to + a light at the end of the tunnel for that tough period in their lives. they celebrated katy being cancer-free at the beach in November of that year. the rainbows that hawaii is known for became an important symbol for them, and this journey to complete their family was commemorated with a little rainbow tattoo…adding their second rainbow baby, shae to the mix…and now officially having a home in this place they love so much - the little rainbow kauai.
